Presenting Change Reflection

After finishing the dissemination project, we looked for thoughtful and important responses from the unit we did our project for. The response was that the staff that did the survey agreed on the feasibility of improvement of sleep quality because it is something many individuals in the hospital struggle with. They also agree that it was feasible to implement the new practices within their unit to better the outcome for patients overall. Their feedback included difficulty accessing certain interventions to improve sleep. Having the accessibility of fans, aromatherapy, white noise machines can be difficult. Other feedback that was important to consider was the cost of the sleep interventions. Overall, the unit staff responded very well to the project and look forward to trying to implement these new practices into their daily practices for patients.

This project taught me many different things that can be used within my future practice of nursing. First, I learned that I can effectively and efficiently work with others to create a great outcome. In the hospital, the staff are always working together to provide the best care for the patients. I know I can work well with others which is extremely important for my future position in the nursing world. Through working on this project, I was able to dissect evidence-based articles to create a project that can improve the overall outcome for the patients. I now understand that I can work through scholarly articles to work on a project which will greatly benefit me in the future because nursing improves through new evidence-based practices.

I have learned many things about myself from this project. By working on this project with a group helped me learn a different approach of working on projects. We were able to break up the work into equal parts and discuss our parts with the rest of the team to continuously improve the project. This process helped us succeed with this project. As a team member, I realized I did not have to control the entire project. Oftentimes I enjoy being the leader and leading the team. However, this project I allowed myself to let others lead and follow by example.  Before this project, I always viewed myself as only a leader that could not follow others, but this project allowed me to discover a new part of myself which I think improves my ability to work in groups.

Final Reflection

Through this team project, I learned a lot about myself and my teammates, as well as ways to manage conflict. Before this project, I knew I had characteristics of leadership, but I often struggled with not being the leader. However, in this project I was able to let another individual lead and I recommended ideas but was not the team leader. This newfound knowledge will help me in the future with my nursing practice because I will be able to lead others but also let others lead, which I think is a very valuable characteristic in a team. This team project helped me better understand quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives that will be part of my nursing practice. The project allowed me to work as a team to finalize an evidence-based practice report that helped me understand how to work in a team on something that may be a large part of my practice in the future.

Our team process was dividing and conquering. We divided up and equally worked on the project. After we finished our piece we would peer-review the other team members’ work and critically appraise it. This allowed us to work efficiently and work well. This team process allowed us to complete valuable work for our project. I learned that as a team member myself I can lead but also follow. I also learned how to recommend another member to change something in a positive way that does not cause strife. This project truly helped me learn many things about myself and my ability to work within a team.

Ethical Considerations for EBP

After completing all ethical assignments, my understanding of the nurse’s contribution to ethical conduct of research and implementation of research has not changed dramatically. Ethical conduct of research and implementation of research are so important in nursing because there is a potential you will be basing your care on this research. I knew it was important for a nurse to thoroughly check the ethical conduct of a research paper because it will be used to care for patients. Due to this, I believe my understanding has grown but has not changed dramatically.

It is also very important for nurses to know the historical evolution and principles of research ethics. Understanding historical events such as The Tuskegee Study is important so something like that will never happen in the future. In Miss Evers’ Boys, it showed how problematic and ethically wrong The Tuskegee Study was. It is a very good movie for nurses to watch to understand how important ethics is for their patients. Nurses should know the historical lack of research and ethics in studies so, in the future, they can provide better ethics for populations that need medical care.

After finishing the course objectives, I feel as though I am very capable of participating in the ethical conduct of research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice initiatives. When I become a nurse, I plan to use these course objectives to help initiate evidence-based practices with my team as well as participate in ethical conduct and quality improvement to further better my care of individuals. This course has given me the key fundamentals to continue to make ethical conduct, quality improvement, and evidence-based practices better for the future.

Gratitude and Self-Care

In many professional settings being grateful and having gratitude for the employees around you is very significant. Being thankful for having a team of professional staff surrounding you and expressing your thankfulness can go along way. There are many ways to express gratitude, some are as simple as saying thank you to a colleague or noticing an individual struggling and helping them out. Having gratitude in a professional setting creates a positive and effective group.

When I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed, the best way for me to manage these feelings is to take a walk or go for a run. If the professional setting I will not have the ability to take a walk or go for a run but I will have the ability to take a step back, take a breath, and reassess why I am feeling the way I am. This step process is a very simple way for me to decompress and elevate some of the stress I am feeling.
